the nightmares dangle
in front of bruised and red-lined eyes,
taunts and hands that creep
under paper skin in dream-land –
( the minutes trace
lines up the knobs of her
spine:
right up until they
reach the fur of hair
on her neck,
when her eyes fly open with
hollow bird bones
as eyelashes .
)
the bed sheets are coils of
rope as she struggles against
the stench of his voice,
the sound of hands rustling
skin and
the feel of his eyes scouring
a body too bare in his
endless presence:
(
battle scars breathe
tales of limitless wars
and still,
the hours are as long as
paint trying to dry,
and it stretches to midnight
with anticlimactic silence. )
she stops pinching bitten
nails into her skin and she knows
that her chances of waking
up at four in the morning with
a cry for her mother on her lips
has lowered to just above the ground and the
nightmares tangle in the spiderweb
of a dream-catcher
that only works after midnight.
( and so, sleep
whisks itself around the room,
sniffing at razorblades
and beads in a teacup
that measure happiness –
until it settles itself like a
blanket over a bone-weary
body of dust and
nightmares. )

and you and i relive our joy every night without much thought about why we do it we share the details of our secret loves with one another rekindling the fire that sparked it all the glimmers the sparkle the glamour of that first interest leaves you and i hungry and i believe you and i are growing closer by these addictions and vices we feed at 3:15 am this dream exchange is going to crash one day because the money we stake on this dream talk is quite a big gamble and we, the poor and sensitive, are running out of free passes yes one day either we will consume our dreams or they will consume us.
